Carbohydrates, simply called carbs, are a macronutrient and include starches, sugar and fiber. When digested, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose. While glucose is used for a number of functions in the body, its primary function is as an energy source. If not used immediately, glucose is stored in the muscles or liver.
